Types of Ikat @Sourceitright.
Usually, Ikat types are based on the fabric content and the origin. We have the following:
Pochampally Ikat, also known as cotton Ikat, originated in the present-day Telangana region. Here yarn is dyed manually and then weaved on a hand loom or power loom by Artisans, making it unique yet economical.
Sambalpuri Ikat has its origins in the state of Orissa. It is renowned for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns and is most preferred for making blouses.
Double Ikat is an Ikat fabric in which both the warp and weft yarns have been dyed, making the weaving more complex and advanced.
Mercerised Ikat is so called as the yarn used is of mercerized cotton, which gives it a gentle sheen and is perfect for a semi-formal or festive look.
Silk Ikat, the yarn used, is pure raw silk and is favoured for making elegant suits, lehengas, blouses and sarees.
SICO Ikat, which uses a mix of cotton and silk yarns, looks similar to silk Ikat and is perfect for making blouses, heavy dresses and sarees.
Bhagalpuri Ikat is a cotton fabric made in the Bhagalpur region by the cottage and small weavers using the Ikat manufacturing technique. The surface patterns and colors of this Ikat are different from the Pochampally cotton Ikat. This Cotton Ikat Fabric is thin, has a starched finish, and is economical compared to other Ikat fabrics. It is a go-to Ikat fabric for garment manufacturers.
Azo Free Cotton Ikat Fabric, the dye used, is suitable for people with sensitive skin and those prone to allergies. Dyes used in manufacturing are Azo Free and hence the name.
Further, Patola - the famous weave from Gujarat, is also a type of Ikat and is a wedding favourite. Patola Fabric is referred to as the "Queen of Silks" for its regal design. Patola sarees are a symbol of royalty.
Ikat Manufacturing
Ikat is a dyeing process that uses resist dyeing on the yarns before weaving the cloth to create patterns on textiles. There are three types of Ikat based on whether the lengthwise yarn(warp) or the crosswise yarn(weft), or both(double) have been dyed. The first two are called Single Ikat, and the last is called Double Ikat. To put it in one line- the dyeing method used to produce designs on fabric is known as Ikat!
In India, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, Gujarat, and Odisha are the three main places where it evolved into a well-known handloom textile craft.
Along with India and China, Ikat is also extensively produced and worn in Indonesia, Japan, South America and Uzbekistan.
