Velvet is a plush, luxurious fabric distinguished by a soft touch, lustrous appearance and beautiful drape. Due to these unique characteristics, Velvet exudes elegance and royalty like no other fabric.
Uses of Velvet Fabric
Velvet fabric has a silky soft touch and a glare due to its pile weaving. Primarily used to give a royal look to the dress, Velvet finds proper application in dresses like party gowns, blouses, saree, embroidered fabrics, and fashion accessories. We have solid and cross tones of velvet fabric suitable as dress material for embroidery work and making accessories. Velvet is also widely used for furnishings and upholstery.
Manufacturing Process of Velvet and Types of Velvet
Velvet is produced on a unique loom called a double cloth, which makes two thicknesses of material simultaneously and then cut apart, creating a distinguished pile effect that gives Velvet its velvety touch.
Earlier Velvets were made of silk and were, therefore, extremely expensive, only available to the royal and noble classes. Around 750 A.D., the material was first introduced in Baghdad, but its manufacturing ultimately expanded to the Mediterranean, and the cloth was exported throughout Europe.
Nowadays, Velvet is mainly made from synthetic fibres like polyester or natural fabrics like cotton. The material used in the manufacturing process defines the type of Velvet, e.g. Silk Velvet, Viscose Velvet, Micro Velvet (Made from polyester), Cotton Velvet etc.
