About Modern Kalamkari Fabric & History
The exquisite Kalamkari is an ancient form of printing and derives its name from the word-'kalam', which means pen and 'kari', which means craftsmanship. Traditionally, two printing styles were used- block-print and hand-paint.
Initially, Kalamkari portrayed scenes from sacred scriptures like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with other esoteric and ancient symbols, which are still in use today. Apart from these, nature-inspired motifs like flowers, peacocks, and paisleys are also widely used.
Based on how the technique is carried out, there are essentially two Kalamkari styles: Machilipatnam and Srikalhasti.
In the Srikalahasti style, the "kalam" or pen is used for freehand drawing of the subject and filling in the colours, which is also by hand. In the Machilipatnam style, printing is done with hand-carved blocks.
